DAYTON — Five children are in the custody of children's services after police found them living without food or electricity inside a boarded-up home in Dayton, officials said.

Officers were called to the 3500 block of Delphos Avenue for a welfare check on the afternoon of Oct. 1, according to Dayton police Lt. Eric Sheldon. The children, all between the ages of 4 and 12, were inside the property, which had been posted as a nuisance-abatement site. No adults were present, Sheldon said.

First responders took the children to Dayton Children's Hospital for medical evaluations. They were then placed in the custody of Montgomery County Children's Services.

The department's Care House Unit is investigating. No criminal charges had been announced as of Monday. Police said the discovery comes more than three months after 16 children were found living in what officials described as deplorable conditions at a home in Vinton County.
