Ohio's latest school report cards show Ross County districts averaging three out of five stars overall, with several local schools posting improvements over last year's ratings.

The state grades schools in six categories — achievement, early literacy, gap closing, progress, graduation rate and college, workforce and military readiness — awarding up to five stars in each.

Adena Local Schools earned an overall rating of three stars, up from last year. The district's weakest mark came in early literacy with one star, while it earned four stars each for gap closing, graduation rate and readiness. Adena was one of three county schools to receive a one-star early literacy ranking this year.

Chillicothe City Schools also finished with three stars overall, an improvement over last year's score. The district's lowest mark was one star in early literacy, while gap closing, progress, graduation rate and readiness each came in at three stars.

District leaders say the results will guide where changes are needed so students can earn stronger marks next year, with early literacy emerging as the clear trouble spot across the county.
